If you’re like me, then you love your makeup, trying new looks and experimenting with new techniques can be really fun. But removing it after, especially after a long day out? Meh… not so much.
We all understand the importance of thoroughly removing our makeup. The combination of sebum and makeup is not a good idea for your pores and if you don’t remove it properly, you put your skin at risk of painful, embarrassing and “painfully embarrassing” zits. Foam cleansers are ok and makeup wipes should only be used by the lazy but nothing beats a dedicated oil based cleanser specifically formulated as a makeup remover.
Makeup, especially waterproof makeup, is designed to stay on and normal cleansing is never going to do a good job at removing all of it. Not only are they fun, but they are also serious about what they do! All their products are vegan and cruelty-free and have playful names. The Berry Melting Makeup Remover Balm is one such product. I tried it everyday for 2 weeks and this is what I found.
First Impression
The purple balm is packed in a lightweight matte tub of 80g/2.82oz. At first glance, it looks like a purple candle due to its wax-like texture. It comes bundled with a purple spatula with I Dew Care’s signature smiling-winking emoji imprinted on it. The spatula was a nice touch so you don’t keep sticking your fingers in the tub and helps prevent it from getting contaminated.
When I first opened the lid, a refreshing grape-berry scent wafted through the air. Scooping out the sherbet-like balm with the spatula provided was easy and the spatula made it easy for me to control the amount I was taking out. If you’ve ever used balms before, you know it can be tricky getting the right amount out without getting it under your nails.
The only annoyance is that if they had made the spatula a centimeter shorter, it would have stored nicely under the cap. As it is, there isn’t a convenient place to store the spatula making it easy to lose. For convenience, I ended shoving it into the balm to fit it into the jar.
The packaging is adorable and aesthetically pleasing! Ideal for those who are bored with minimalistic looks and prefer something with a bit more personality. Furthermore, it's so lightweight and not in liquid form, making it perfect as skincare travelling essential.
Application and Effect
Just as with any other cleansing balm, this makeup removing balm is pretty straightforward. No drama here. A little goes a long way as I only had to scoop a blueberry sized amount and it was more than enough for my whole face.
The balm's texture felt very smooth and silky like butter which soon turned into oil quickly after massaging it for a few moments with dry fingers on my dry skin. I then added a little water to emulsify the balm and massaged it for a few minutes more before rinsing it off with warm water.
The product left a bit of a waxy sensation on my skin which is not too unfamiliar with many oil based cleansers or cleansing balms. It didn’t really bother me much as I usually used a cleansing balm as the first step of my double cleanse and I followed it up with the Cellus Micro Foam Cleanser from Lagom as a second cleanse.
I tried using it several times on both light and heavy makeup and it worked well regardless how much makeup I had on. This cleansing balm effortlessly melted away my makeup, even waterproof makeup and left my skin looking dewy and plump. In fact, it was especially effective at removing waterproof makeup!
I Dew Care says that this product is ideal for all skin types but if you have sensitive skin, you should always be careful when using makeup removers, so test it out first. If you are sensitive to fragrance, you should also be cautious as I Dew Care products do have very unique fragrances and this cleansing balm is no different. Nevertheless, it did not cause any irritation or acne breakouts for me.
In the two weeks that I was using the Berry Melting Makeup Remover Balm as the first step in my double cleanse routine, it left my skin feeling soft and moisturised. Even after using a foam cleanser after, I felt that my skin felt more moisturised than when I used a natural oil cleanser and my skin had a noticeable healthy dewy glow.
3 Key Ingredients Packed To Feel Your Berry Cleanest
Having seen such a unique texture and how it effectively melts away even waterproof makeup, I couldn't help but find out what's in the purple concoction. Its key ingredients are all-natural.
Blueberry Fruit Extract: Blueberries are rich in polyphenols, a type of antioxidant and have a much higher antioxidant level than other fruits, making them a skincare superfood. In addition to Polyphenols, Blueberry Extract is also rich in Vitamin C, another antioxidant known to help brighten skin. Together they help combat damage from free radicals and other environment stressors.
Glacier Water: Produced by centuries of natural filtration, Glacier Water is an effective moisturising agent. Rich in natural (skin healthy) minerals that reduces its acidity and helps balance your skin’s natural pH. It also has a skin calming effect and is quickly absorbed into lower layers of your skin, helps lock in moisture for a hydrating and refreshing feel.
Jojoba Oil: Rich in Vitamin E, which helps your skin fight oxidative stress caused by everyday exposure to pollutants and other toxins, Jojoba Oil needs little introduction. It's a humectant ingredient that helps to replenish and lock moisture into your skin and is very close in its composition to sebum minimising skin sensitivity while effectively dissolving and unclogging pores.
Final Thoughts
I like no blueberries in my ice cream cake but I like them in my skincare! This oil-based balm cleanser melts away makeup BERRY EFFECTIVELY to leave your complexion feeling soft, smooth and moisturised. I'm a fan of the scent but fragranced skincare products are a personal thing. I think it is invigorating and gives a rather dull and boring product a certain pizzazz.
As a cleansing balm, the Berry Melting Makeup Remover Balm is more suitable for those looking for a good oil based cleanser as the first step of a double cleanse as it does take longer to rinse off. If you’re looking at an oil based cleanser as a stand-alone cleanser, you could try the Cellup Gel-to-Water Cleanser from Lagom or for a touch of luxury, the AA Cleansing Oil from Shangpree.
Overall, it does its job and lives up to its name of melting my makeup. The only thing I think could have been improved is if they had a place to store the spatula. At SGD 48, it is a little on the pricier side but it does seem to last forever as just a little bit will help dissolve your makeup unbelievably well making this a very worthwhile investment into clean and clear skin.
